THEDRAW. A wonderful little ANSI text editor, which comes with lots of neat
fonts. Murphy's Law being what it is, though, I didn't notice any of those
fonts when I made my first ANSI screen. Instead, I laborously drew out my
message by hand, making big letters using all those neat little ASCII char-
acters. And THEN I discovered the built-in typefaces and almost had a
conniption. Anyway, I posted my hand-drawn message on a BBS, and a fellow
user, Ben Fowler, suggested that I finish the character set, and upload the
font. A few weeks later, here it finally is.

The following files should be in this ZIP file:
CALVIN.TDF The basic, "bold" version of my typeface.
  CALVIN_L.TDF The "light" version.
CALVIN_S.TDF The "small caps" version, bold & light.
CLASSIC.TDF Classic big letters. Not very useful, but fun.

A few words of explanation are in order:

I spent quite some time trying to decide what to name my typefaces. The
problem was that I couldn't think of a simple way of describing them, so a
descriptive name was out of the question. I almost sent 'em out named after
me, for lack of any better ideas, but finally I decided to dedicate them to
a truly worthy character: Calvin, from Bill Waterson's comic strip.

The first two typefaces, "Calvin" and "CalvinLight" both have the full
character set, with both UPPERCASE and LOWERCASE letters. I'm rather proud
of that. I don't know what purpose it serves, but I'm proud of it just the
same. One word of warning: A certain amount of manual kerning is needed for
the lowercase "q." Thus:

BEFORE: AFTER:

ͻ ͻ
                       o o
     ͻ ͻ ͻ ͻ ͻ ͻ ͻ ͻ
       ͼ ʻ ͼ ʻ
       ͼ ͹ ͼ ͼ ͼ ͹ ͼ ͼ

                  ȼ ȼ

"CalvinSmCaps" is the small capital letters version of the font. Uppercase
is bold, and lowercase is light. All numbers, symbols, etc. are light. I
probably should have split it into two fonts, with one having bold numbers and
symbols, but I didn't think it was necessary. If you really need bold numbers,
you can just type 'em out, and trace them, using character set 2.
This typeface can be used by itself, or together with the first two fonts,
using, say, "Calvin" for capital letters, and uppercase "CalvinSmCaps" for
lowercase letters. Just move the cursor down two lines in between them.

"Classic" is... well, classic. It's about the crudest form of giant letters
you can get, and it looks like this:

TTTTT H H IIIII SSSS IIIII SSSS AAAAA TTTTT EEEEE SSSS TTTTT !! !!
   T H H I S I S A A T E S T !! !!
   T HHHHH I SSS I SSS AAAAA T EEEE SSS T !! !!
   T H H I S I S A A T E S T
   T H H IIIII SSSS IIIII SSSS A A T EEEEE SSSS T !! !!

Nothing incredible, but I thought it would be fun to have around. In this
font, uppercase and lowercase are identical. Also, because of the way the
THEDRAW font editor works, there is no ampersand. Sorry.

   Note:
I recommend putting two spaces between words in all of these typefaces.
The "X" and the "*" were murder to draw in the "Calvin" family, and I'm
still not totally satisfied with them. Just wanted you to know.

One last thing: What do I want for making these?

Peace on earth. Brotherhood among mankind, not to mention womankind.
And a large extra-cheese pizza. But let's be realistic here.

This font collection is SHAREWARE. Share it with your friends. Share it
with your neighbors. Share it with your neighbors' friends. BUT, if after
a reasonable period of time, you decide you really, really like these fonts,
then you are REQUIRED to send me 50. In cash. Members of the Pentagon must
send $75,000, or a B-1 bomber.

What is a reasonable period of time? 25 years, or until you feel really,
really, guilty about not paying me. Which is understandable. Just think--
as soon as 40 people pay me, I'll be able to afford to register my copy of
THEDRAW. Which will make its writer very happy, and save me from a costly
lawsuit. About the only ones who'll be depressed are the lawyers. But they
probably deserve it.

Seriously, forget the money. Just enjoy the fonts. And have a nice day.
